The Story
Precolonial Philippines had a rich culture and tradition of tattoo rituals, or pagbabatuk. Both men and women were heavily tattooed for different reasons: for men, they were marks of their skill and bravery in battle; for women, they were symbols of beauty and fertility. More than just decorative designs, the myriad of symbols ritually inked on our ancestors each had a special meaning, as did their placement on the body. The number of tattoos a warrior had increased with every battle he fought or the number of kills he made.
Our ancestors also believed that tattoos were markers of identity, and certain symbols belonged to particular groups. This was how your ancestors would know and welcome you in the afterlife.
Let the Warrior’s Hand Talisman be a reminder that the blood of warriors flows through your veins. Let it remind you that wherever you are in the world, you will always be a part of the stories of our people.
