Vol. IV: Talismans

Talismans is my take on the Filipino anting-anting, which are amulets worn typically for protection. They trace their roots back to precolonial times, but over the centuries of colonial rule, many of these amulets now depict Christian motifs. For my collection, I wanted to peel back that layer of colonialism and instead highlight the symbols and beliefs of our precolonial ancestors.

Apart from symbolism, the technique and materials I use also date back to ancient times. I sculpted each piece from beeswax, and then cast in metal using the millennia-old technique called lost wax casting. Creating this collection was also an exercise in experimental archaeology. I wanted to get into the headspace of our ancient artisans, and used only the most basic tools and an open flame to create this collection. I wanted each jewelry piece to look organic, and like they could've been found in an ancient tomb.
