The Story:
Like many ancient cultures around the world, precolonial Filipinos followed a lunar calendar. The waxing & waning of the moon acted as a way to mark the passage of one month to another. This lunar cycle was called “buan”, which is now the word we use for “month”.
Here are native names for the some of the phases of the moon:
• Gimata - when the moon appeared to “open its eyes”
• Odto na an bulan - when the first quarter moon is directly overhead at sunset
• Maalimangona - when the moon appears lopsided just before or after a full moon and looks like a crab shell
• Dayaw - the full moon
The Moon Phase earrings are handwoven with Japanese glass beads and drop 3”. The gold beads have a lovely iridescence that shimmer when they catch the light!
Size: Drops 8 cm.
Materials: Glass seed beads, waxed thread, gold-tone stainless steel posts and backs. Stainless steel findings make these safe for sensitive ears.
